Living abroad

Therapy in English when you live abroad

Danijela Marić · 3 min read

In short

If you live in another country, local therapists may work in a language you can't use for what really hurts, and therapists back home feel far away. Online psychotherapy and counselling in English (or Croatian) with Danijela Marić costs €80 per 60 minute Zoom session, and the first 15 minute conversation is free.

You moved for work, for love, or because staying was harder than leaving. On paper the new life works. You have a job, a place to live, maybe a partner, maybe children who already speak the local language better than you do. And still something doesn't sit right, and there's nobody nearby you would tell.

Many people who live abroad get stuck in the same place. Local therapists work in a language you can't use to talk about what really hurts. The ones back home feel far from the life you actually live now. So you wait and tell yourself it will pass.

This is where I work. I offer psychotherapy and counselling in English, online, wherever you live.

What people bring

Mostly it's the ordinary heavy things, made heavier by distance. Stress and anxiety that don't switch off, even on good days. A relationship under pressure, often with two cultures and two families pulling in different directions. Loneliness, even with a full calendar. The decision whether to stay, move on or go back. Old patterns that crossed the border with you, because they always do. And sometimes the question of who you are when nobody around you knows your history.

If English isn't your first language

It isn't mine either. I'm Croatian, I live in Lithuania, and I spent 17 years in aviation, four of them based in Doha.

You don't need perfect English for this work. You need enough to say what's going on, and we find the rest together. If a word in your own language says it better, say it, and we look at what it means for you. If Croatian is easier, we can work in Croatian.

How it works

Sessions are on Zoom, 60 minutes, €80. First we have a free conversation of up to 15 minutes. You tell me briefly what's happening, I tell you honestly whether I think I can help, and you decide whether to continue.

You need a room where nobody can hear you, headphones and a stable connection. If your car is the only private place you have, that works too. When you write to me, tell me your time zone so we can find a time that suits us both.

What online sessions can't do

If you're in crisis, thinking about harming yourself, or you need a diagnosis or medication, you need someone where you live: a doctor, a local crisis line or emergency services. If I think that's what you need, I'll tell you, and I'll help you think through how to find it.

The goal

I don't want you to need me forever. The work is done when you trust yourself again, in whatever country you happen to live.

More about how I work is on the psychotherapy page. If you'd like to start, write to me for a free 15 minute conversation.

FAQ

The questions people actually ask.

Can I have therapy in English if English is not my first language?

Yes. You don't need perfect English, only enough to say what is going on. If a word in your own language says it better, say it and we look at what it means for you. Croatian is also possible.

How much does online therapy in English cost?

A session is 60 minutes on Zoom and costs €80. The first conversation of up to 15 minutes is free and carries no obligation.

What can online sessions not do?

They are not suitable for crisis, thoughts of self harm, or when you need a diagnosis or medication. Then you need a doctor, a local crisis line or emergency services, and I will help you think through how to find them.
